Word count 6/29/17 – Yesterday’s failure and today’s writing

Due to financial obligations this month, I had to stop that practice in order to save up money to pay for something. So except for a couple of exceptions, I really haven't had any soda for the past 3 weeks. Yesterday (for me, actually Tuesday evening), I decided to splurge slightly and get a soda toward the end of my shift. Around 3 hours before the end. The reason why I'm being specific about the time is that it leads directly into why my writing session, or lack thereof, didn't happen.

I know that too much sugar usually causes issues with my allergies. What I've never really noticed in the past is the sugar crash after the fact. Due to my ADHD, caffeine doesn't affect me the way it does for most people. It actually makes me sleepy. Sugar, on the other hand, usually fires me up. With that being said, I decided that having a Coke should be fine. It wasn't.

On my drive home, I nearly fell asleep at the wheel. It was a real struggle to stay awake. Once home, I was so mentally exhausted that I realized I couldn't write. With that in mind, I decided I would go to bed early and try to get up early to write. That didn't go as planned either. My allergies were bad enough that I was forced to take cough syrup in order to settle my coughing enough to fall asleep. Unfortunately, whenever I take it, I'm usually groggy the entire next day unless I sleep an excessive amount of time, which is what I did. I slept from 1 am to 1 pm. So 12 hours of sleep. This might not seem too excessive unless you keep in mind that I normally only sleep between 4-5 hours a night normally.

What this taught me is how much, and how badly, drinking one soda late at night is to my writing. I lost a full day because of it and felt miserable for part of the next day. This tells me that, no matter how good it tastes or how much I enjoy it, I can't afford to drink it if I plan to write every day. It's just not worth it. With all that said, I had a pretty decent writing session tonight. Here are my stats:

Word count: 2,525 (only missed my goal by 134 words. I just didn't feel like starting on the next scene this late)
Word count total for project: 36,593
Time spent writing: Exactly 2 hours, so averaging 1262 words per hour, so right in line with what I was estimating before.

So, assuming I can get myself to write for just over 4 hours a day, it's not unrealistic to believe I can hit 5K a day. It again all comes down to getting myself to start earlier. Today, I didn't even start until 5:30 am. What I really need to do is figure out some process to focus myself much quicker than my random youtube watching habit. So that'll be my next quest.
